About the Claremont Club

The Claremont Club is a Berkeley neighborhood social club, begun by Mrs. H.W. Taylor along with her friends and neighbors. They had the Clubhouse, 214 Hillcrest Road, built in 1911. Designed by Charles Sumner Kaiser, the Clubhouse was financed by the sale of stock in The Claremont Assembly Hall Company.

Members today live in the Claremont/Elmwood neighborhood, and in surrounding communities. Members may bring guests, especially potential new members, to the Club’s monthly parties, which are usually held the evening of the third Saturday of the month, October through May. The parties are organized by committees of volunteer members. Committee participants enthusiastically state that planning and running the parties is where creativity bubbles and friendships are deepened.

The Board of Directors keep the Club organized and solvent, and maintain the Clubhouse itself in good repair. In 1960, the Club was granted status as a non-profit California Corporation, IRC 501(c)(7).

Membership is exclusively by invitation. Active Members are entitled to vote and participate in decisions regarding the club's management, operations, and governance. Members are responsible for paying the initiation fee and annual dues. No portion of the Club's net earnings benefits any individual member. Access to the clubhouse is limited to members and their guests. The Club does not discriminate against prospective members based on race, color, or religion.
